SUGGESTED PAYMENT OF COUNCILLORS
LYTTELTON BOROUGH’S OPPOSITION
A suggestion that councillors be paid for their attendances at meetings was opposed by the Lyttelton Borough Council last evening, when it considered a letter from the Municipal Association asking for the council’s opinion of the proposal.
In moving that the proposal be opposed, Cr. W. Morris said that councillors did not wish to be paid. They were not out of pocket in any way. Cr. A. M. Miller said he would support the motion, but he did not agree that councillors were not out of pocket. Some councillors were out of pocket, but were prepared to carry on for the good of the town.
The council also opposed a suggestion, forwarded by the Municipal Association. that councils consider the institution of a staff retiring fund. Councillors expressed the opinion that the superannuation scheme now in operation provided amply for employees.
