OBITUARY

MR F. E. DORNWELL

A distinguished soldier in the First and Second World Wars, and a widelyknown authority on crawler tractors, Mr Frank Edwin Dornwell died suddenly in Christchurch yesterday. Mr Dornwell was assistant to the general manager of Gough, Gough, and Hamer, Ltd.

During the First World War Mr Dornwell joined the Army and was later stationed at Cologne. Germany, with the Army of Occupation. On his return to New Zealand he joined the Territorial forces, in which he served as a major until the outbreak of the Second World War. Mr Dornwell was then second-in-command to MajorGeneral Sir Howard Kippenberger, then commanding officer of the 20th Battalion. After serving in Egypt for several months. Mr Dornwell was transferred to a British unit guarding the Suez Canal. He subsequently served in Italy. Joining the staff of A. S. Paterson and Company, Ltd., at an early age, Mr Dornwell became an authority on crawler 'tractors. In 1932 he joined Gough, Gough, and Hamer. Ltd., where he served until the time of his death. Mr Dornwell is survived by his wife, one son (Mr Keith Dornwell), and one daughter (Mrs W. E. Lawry).
