“SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR”

J. R. REID CHOSEN John Reid, the captain of the New Zealand cricket team last season, has been voted the winner of this year’s “Sportsman of the Year” trophy. Reid, who lives in Oamaru, will be presented with the trophy at a function that is expected to be held in Dunedin next month.

The donors of the trophy have suggested that g charge could be made for admission to a public function for the occasion and that the money could be given to the Olympic appeal

fund in Otago. The offer has been accepted by the Otago Olympic Appeal Organising Committee which has suggested that a function be held on July 10. Reid has also been selected “Batsman of the Year” (in 1951) and in 1955 he became the first player to win both the Redpath Cup for batting and the Windsor Cup for bowling in the same year. When the original poll was taken, Murray Halberg tied with Reid for the award. On the second poll Reid received 1035 votes and Halberg 651. One voter explained his choice with the opinioh that when the New Zealand cricket team won its first test it was for Reid the “culmination of a meritorious past” while the Olympic Games still held for Halberg “the opportunity to reach great heights.’ ’
