AUCKLAND CITY RATES
LEVY THIS YEAR A RECORD
“The Press” Special Service
AUCKLAND, June 11
The Auckland City Council has fixed its rate for the current year at 5s 4d —an increase of 9d in the £1 and the highest on record. The increase is estimated to add £252,000 to the income of the council and will produce a credit balance of £1896. The consolidated rate does not include the separate water rates. The water rates remain the same as last —4 per cent, for residential and 2? per cent, for non-residential properties. A recommendation that water meter charges be increased by Id a thousand gallons was struck out by the finance committee when it pruned the estimates. Estimates of expenditure framed by various committees of the council came to £2,358.884, which require a rate increase of 9d. The recommendation of the finance committee cut £12.000 from the committees’ original figures, which would have required another halfpenny.
