CRICKET TEST

Australia 103 For 5

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright)

(Rec. 12.45 a.in.) LONDON, June 11

Determined batting by R. N. Harvey and R. Archer improved Australia’s propects of saving the first test against England at Trent Bridge today. After Australia bail lost four wickets for 36 runs, Archer and Harvey added 54 and at lunch the score was 103 for five wickets in reply to England’s 217 for eight wickets declared. The fourth day of this rain-affected match was warmer than the others, and before lunch there was some sunshine. England used only spin bowlers throughout the morning, and al-

though the pitch was not a vicious one. there was sufficient turn in it to demand the keenest concentration and a highly developed degree of batsmanship. Harvey batted two hours this morning and scored only 30 more runs, but he gave a most admirable display of defensive batting with his team in difficulties Archer was more often in doubt, but whenever the opportunity arose he hit very hard. Once he sent Laker into the crowd—a stroke R. Benaud repeated only minutes before lunch.

England’s bowling was good. Lock and Laker extracting everything the pitch offered them! but the Australians showed a rare appreciation of the virtue of aggression. K. R. Miller was a little unlucky, the ball which dismissed him turned far more abruptly than any other during the morning. Scores:—
