SALVATION ARMY APPOINTMENT
LEADER IN N.Z.

.Commissioner R. A. Hoggard, territorial commander of the Salvation Army in New- Zealand, who will leave on July 18 for a new appointment overseas, has received . word from General Wilfred Kitching, international leader of the Army, that Lieu-tenant-Commissioner R. S. Harewood has been appointed leader of the Salvation Army in New Zealand. Lieutenant-Commissioner Harewood is at present commander of the Army’s forces in Scotland and Ireland. Before that he was second-in-com-mand of the Australian, Southern and Canadian territories. His association with the Salvation Army dates from his birth. His father was bandmaster of the Leederville Salvation Army Band, Western Australia, and Robert Hoggard became a player when. he was 12. Later he became a bandmaster and song leader. As an officer he served for a period in journalistic work, and wrote the words and music for several hymns. Mrs Harewood is a New Zealander, a daughter of one of the pioneer officers in New Zealand, the late Brigadier Holdaway, who began the Salvation Army’s work among the Maoris in the Wanganui river area.
