ASSURANCE TO N.Z.

Full Precautions To Be Taken

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 8.

Commenting on the United Kingdom proposal to use a remote part of the Pacific Ocean for the nuclear tests, the Acting Prime Minister (Mr K. J. Holyoake) said today that the New Zealand Government was con- > suited before the decision to use the Christmas Island area was taken. The United Kingdom Government had assured the New Zealand Government, which was responsible for the administration of Western Samoa, the Cook Islands and the Tokelau group in the South Pacific, that full precautions would be taken to avoid danger to islands, shipping or fishing through radioactive contamination. ; The tests would be conducted in an area which was well clear of all inhabited islands and would be of such a nature that heavy fallout would not be produced. Mr Holyoake confirmed that, in response to requests from the United Kingdom Government, the New Zealand Government had agreed to assist in providing meteorological and other facilities needed by the United Kingdom in carrying out the tests.
