The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr E. H. Halstead) visited a flour mill and a footwear factory yesterday morning on the third day of his visit to see Christchurch industries. He met a deputation from clothing manufacturers. visited the district office of the Department of Industries and Commerce, and then returned to Wellington by air in the afternoon. Dr. I. E. M. Watts, the new director of the Royal Observatory, Hong Kong, is a New Zealander. He was formerly deputy-director of the Malayan Meteorological Service for nine years. Before that, he was with the New eZaland Meteorological Service and the R.N.Z.A.F. He has written many scientific papers, and is best known in New Zealand for his “Forecasting New Zealand Weather.”
Mr M. H. Oram, of London, the eldest son of Sir Matthew Oram and Lady Oram, of Palmerston North, has been appointed actuary and manager o f the National Mutual Life Assurance Society, one of the oldest life assurance societies in Britain. He left New Zealand in 1938 to study for an acturial fellowship in London, and became a fellow of the Institute of Actuaries in 1949. He is senior investments tutor at the institute, and is also a fellow of the Royal Society.
