Miss Phyllis Gale, of Puriri street. Riccarton, will leave Wellington today in the Dominion Monarch to attend a summer school of Scottish country dancing at the University of St. Andrews. Scotland Later she will go to Ireland, where she will further ner study of the Irish step and figure dancing. t
Miss Doreen M. O’Neill, formerly of Ashburton, Timaru. and Dunedin, has been appointed a flight hostess with Australian National Airways. She will begin training in Melbourne next month.
Mrs C. Plumridge, who has been president of the Christchurch Area Federation of Townswomen’s Guilds since it was formed six years ago. did not seek re-election at the recent annual meeting of the organisation A gift was presented to Mrs Plumridge at the meeting in appreciation of her work for the guilds. The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the Papanui branch- of the League of Mothers:— president, Mrs Markham; secretary. Mrs Lennen; treasurer, Mrs Rams: magazine secretary, Mrs Legget; Magazine reporter, Mrs Robertson: committee, Mesdames Porter, Davidson, McGuchan, Robertson, Long. Leg get, Lennen and Willis. Six new members were enrolled. Members of the staff of the Cholmondeley Memorial Children’s Home and the children m residence were entertained recently by the Ace Harmonica Band and the Waimate Harmonica Band. Today Mr G. W. Walker, the members of the Junior Chambet of Commerce, and members of the nome’s committee will have a working bee and renew the flooring of the veranda.
Seventy-one newly-made articles ol clothing for children were handed in at the recent meeting of the CORSO women’s guild. Members meet twice a month at the home of the chairman (Mrs R. W. Wornall), where they mend and make up clothes ready for packing for overseas countries. During the year more than 300 newlymade garments have been handed in by the guild.
A gathering of blind persons and friends was entertained at a musicalafternoon presented by Mrs M. Waterson, Mrs L. Gobbe. and. M;ss Sandra McCree at “Maryknoll.” Cashel street, recently. About £3 was collected for the aged at the monthly meeting of the Somerfield Townswomen’s Guild. Mrs F. Milne and Mrs L. Munro were appointed delegates to the annual Dominion conference. Members of the E-Hine Teen-agers Club of the Christchurch Young Women’s Christian Association were the guests of the Young Adult Group of the Y.M.C.A. iff a combined programme held recently. They were welcomed by Mr D. Short. Y.M.C.A. youth director. The early part of the evening was spent in team games held in the Y.M.C.A. gymnasium. This was followed by a social programme, the main feature of which was a series of impromptu speech contests.
The monthly dance and social for patients at Sunnyside Hospital, arranged by Mrs D. E. Chatfield, was held recently in the social hall. Music for dancing was supplied by Mr Gnbben’s orchestra, and extras were played by a band composed of several of the patients. Songs were sung by Mrs Grace Harrall and Mr C. Shirley. Dances were presented by Marlene Smith. Humorous monologues were given by Mr and Mrs Cooper.
