CRATERS AND CLEFTS.—These pictures illustrate two outstanding features of the lunar surface—the craters and the clefts. The two photographs (and the one of the Mare Crisium) were taken at the Pic du Midi Observatory and are from a new publication, “The Moon,” which is reviewed on this page. TOP: The central crater is Triesnecker, a crater more than 14 miles in diameter. Triesnecker has a complex cleft system associated with it. BOTTOM: The Great Cleft is seen passing through the crater-pit Hyginus (some four miles in diameter).
