BARNEY SHAW TO MEET COOPER
EXCELLENT BOUT LIKELY
Johnny Cooper, the Australian wel-ter-weight professional boxer who will make his New Zealand debut at the Civic Theatre on Monday night, has an impressive ring record. Apart from his amateur performances, which were good. Cooper has notched 14 wins in his 18 professional bouts. Of these wins, nine were by knock-outs. Only 23 years of age, Cooper has been handled throughout his career by Ambrose»Palmer, who is well
known in New Zealand not only for his record as a /ghter, but also for the high quality of the large number of boxers he controls. -iSuch good boxers at Pran Mikhus, Nino Squadrico, and Carlos Parchim, are members of his large training squad. Barney Shaw, who will be opposing Cooper, needs no introduction to Christchurch boxing fans, and his forthright methods have given him a large following whenever he is matched. Shaw has won five of his professional bouts by knock-outs, and such good performers as Jimmy Brown, Frankie Wilson, and Jackie Stewart have gone down under the onslaught of his non-stop, relentless style of boxing.
With two boxers of the calibre of Cooper and Shaw, the bout may prove the highlight of the Canterbury Boxing Association s extremely successful season.
