TOURNAMENTS BEFORE FIRST TEST
The New Zealand representative croquet team, which recently arrived in Britain to defend the Macßobertson Shield, has had some success in a series of tournaments preparatory to the first test. In the Peel memorial tournament at Roehampton, Miss Ivy Wainwright (Hamilton) won the women’s singles, Mrs C. Watkins (Hastings) was third, and Mr G. Rowling and his British partner won their doubles match.
The Brighton onen croquet championship was won by Mr A. G. F. Ross (Hastings), and Mrs Watkins was runner-up. The handican singles were won by Mr Watkins (Hastings), and the doubles by Mrs C. McKenzie-Smart and her British partner. Mrs W. H. Kirk (Christchurch) and her British partner were runners-up.
The first test—one of a series of five to be played between June and September—will be held at Brighton, and the lawns are reported to be in excellent condition. The New Zealand players are pleased with the conditions controlling the tournaments, which are restricted ,to one week of play each. The number of participants are limited, and early booking is essential if applications are to be accepted. Roehampton and Hurlingham cater for golf and polo as well as croquet.
