HOSPITAL LOAN OF £450,000
GOOD RESPONSE BY PUBLIC
£449,100 SUBSCRIBED SINCE APPEAL
The North Canterbury Hospital Board has fared better with its latest loan for £450.000 than most other local bodies, some of which have had great difficulty in obtaining subscriptions. The loan opened on April 4, and now is just £9OO short of full subscription. About 80 per cent, of the loan will go towards the new Cashmere Hospital project, including some work on the nurses’ home and ancillary services which must be provided with the erection of the main buildings, but it is also for continuation of work on the board’s bulk store in St. Asaph street and the nurses’ home at Burwood Hospital. Previous loans for the Cashmere Hospital amounted to £900.000.
“The public response to the loan has been terrific, and it is most gratifying to see that the subscribers include many persons who have been patients in hospital, patients’ relatives, and a good cross-section of the board’s staff.” an executive member of the staff said yesterday. “People's good nature has come to the fore, and the response to the loan shows that the hospital services are appreciated.” The minimum debenture, he said, was £5O. and a good part of the loan was made up of small subscriptions by persons who would otherwise have their money in savings banks, but were keen to help in the humane work of the board.
