GAS PIPELINE IN CANADA
LOAN TO U.S.-OWNED COMPANY
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 7 p.m.) OTTAWA, June 6. The Canadian Government’s Pipelines Bill, Parliament’s most controversial legislation singe the conscription crises of World War 11, passed the House of Commons early today and immediately became the first order of business in the Senate.
The measure, under which the Government would lend 80,000,000 dollars to a largely United States-owned corporation to begin building a transCanada gas pipeline, has become symbolic of concern in some circles over the extent of United States investment in Canadian industry. The Conservatives and Socialists atej united in opposition to the Liberal 1 Government and its Social Credit and independent allies in the debate on the bill.
The Opposition said that the bill amounts to a*subsidy out of the Canadian taxpayers’ pockets to a foreign corporation. They also accuse the Government of using dictatorial means to ram it through. The bill must become law tomorrow, or the company, Trans-Canada Pipelines, Ltd., will be relieved of a commitment to build the Alberta-Win-nipeg section of the gas line this year.
