Showdown And Kyle Nurse Favoured For Nelson Double

TROTTING

Showdown, a dual winner at the ; Ashburton meeting last week-end, wih be a short-priced favourite for the : Winter Handicap, the leg of the < double on the opening T day *of the < Nelson Trotting Chib’s winter meeting at Richmond tomorrow. Kyle Nurse, third to False Step and Phantasy in j the New’ Zealand Futurity Stakes ai < Ashburton, will probably be favourite : for the second leg, the Advance Handicap. Showdown outclassed his opponents in his two starts at Ashburton, and, i if he travels well to Nelson, his race : there should hot be anything more than a sound working run. He has an abundance of speed and stamina, and has proved his ability to master' ail types of track. 'Hie going was very heavy when he won at Ashburton on Monday. With a reasonable run in the i middle stages of the race, Showdown | should not be beaten. Most opposition to him may come ! from Signor, a winner at Oamaru last month, and runner-up to Compo Jack at Ashburton on Monday. He had no chance of beating the winner, but was a clear second. The Dillon Hall pacer is not too genuine, but on his day has a fair turn of speed, especially if he can be restrained until' the final furlong before making a sprint. On a very heavy track, he would have good I prospects of reaching a place. Nelson Cup Winner Crystal Star, the backmarken on 36 yards, won the Nelson Cup from Black Rose in .February. The sbn of Arbitrate and Crystal Bird has been disappointing since then, but he has been awkwardly placed in most of his races If he races up to kps best, he could upset calculations. The Southland-owned and trained Lady Nelson was a winner at Hutt Park on Monday. The half-sister to Parawa Derby and Parable is a sound stayer, and she rhay add interest to the finish. Quo Vgdis was a good third to Compo Jack and Signor at Ashburton, and he will have his supporters on the place totalisator. However. it is impossible to see Showdown beaten, if he races up to the form he displayed at Ashburton. Kyle Nurse, which has shown useful form in classic races this season, should prove too good for the others in the Advance Handicap. She is also engaged in the Improvers’ Handicap earlier in the day. A win in that race would result in a penalty, which would nut her out of this race. If producedshe will be favourite. She paced a sound race for third behind False Step and Phantasy in the Futurity Stakes last Saturday. She will not meet such strong opposition at Nelson, and should race prominently. Black Gem was not disgraced when he finished third over two miles to Showdown and Placid Girl at Ashburton on MoUday. The Black Diamond gelding should be well suited by the sprint distance tomorrow, and it will be surprising if he fails to show up. Manunda paced useful races at the Wellington club’s meeting last weekend. and on the strength ,of those ? efforts he is entitled to respect. He . may do better on his home track. . Count Renaldo. which has not raced since February. Paisley Lad, and Pro- : metheus. all of which have useful speed, should do best of the others. I The Trotters t Although he will concede starts of > 60 yards in the Introductory Handicap . and 72 yards in the City Handicap. Nirvana should be too good for the & trotters in these races. r The Indian-

apolis gelding, a half-brother to Dictation, one of the greatest trotters ever raced in New Zealand, gained two decisive wins at Ashburton last weekend. In both of them, he gave a brilliant display of trotting, and he is certain to have benefited from the experience he gained there. The class of horse he will meet at Nelson will not be as good as at Ashburton. Most opposition to Nirvana in both races may come from Care, a four-year-old gelding by Precaution from Firewater in M. Holmes’s stables. Care had his last start at the Canterbury Park Club’s winter meeting last month. He broke near the straight entrance in the Addington Handicap after ’ making most of the pace. His prospects • tomorrow must be highly regarded. i and it will be surprising if he fails i to show up. Van Ardee. a useful third in the i New Zealand Trotting Stakes, will I have bright prospects of being placed in the shorter Introductory Handicap. He has not raced since then and should be better now. Supervise, Unlikely, and Native Cord are others expected to show up in this race. In the longer race. Paisley Lass, and Karingal may do best. There has been seme drying in Nelson during the last'few days, and the track has recovered well from the soaking it received last week. Even so, it will at best be easy for tomorrow. Selections are:— 11 a.m.—lntroductory Handicap: Nirvana. Care, Van Ardee. 11.40 a.m.—lmprovers’ Handicap: Kyle Nurse.
