Dunedin Steeplechase May Be Won By Culton

PACING -;

Culton and Chief Light will domin-»* ate betting on the Dunedin Steeple- 1 chase on the concluding day of the Dunedin Jockey Club's winter meeting or Saturday. ’ Culton has seldom raced badly for • (

his Invercargill owner-trainer. T. M 2 Timpany. and his win last Monday < was well earned. . € Chief Light’s form has shown marked variations- His best is very good; his ’ worst is awful. He was soundly beaten € by The Tongs in the Otago Steeples last Saturday, but his run was a gooc ! < one. and a repetition of it would almost \ c certainly have given him victory twc j cays later, but this time he ran with ( little dash and jumped in a slovenly i r fashion. j c He finished third, but his placing was ■„ rot one to enthuse about. If he gal- ( : lops generously and jumps cleanly ■ - tomorrow. Chief Light will probably beat Culton and the others. None of the others is expected to ( make improvement enough to play a { big role in the finish. Mandeville was . one of the top-Sight ’chasers two sea- ' sons ago. but he was away from raring < for a long time until he reappeared i last Saturday, and he may need more of it to bring him to his peak. Belgravia was one of the first beaten : on Monday. He was probably tangled * by the going, as he has certainly run ] much better races on firm ground. ; Shirley's Pride Favoured Shirley’s Pride has enough ability to win the June Hurdles for her Inver- ; cargill owner-trainer, W. E. Hazlett. < who has alreadv had a good meeting Shirley’s Pride dropped out of the ■ Otago Hurdles on Monday because of the heavy track. Two starts ago. she , toyed with the open hurdlers over a. . mile and five furlongs at Invercargill. < and there is little need for doubt about 1 her ability to master one mile and ■ three-quarters. Dusty Miller, winner of the Otago Hurdles, is again engaged. So are Exchequer and Brutus, which were third and fourth, but beaten off. Dusty Miller stays well and his strong gallop should carry him into the finish. Brutus lacked the racing condition of most of his opponents, and should be much fitter for this test. At the weights, he should beat Exchequer this time. He has won an open hurdle race, so is not as badly treated as Exchequer, which has yet to win against op°n-class hurdlers. H. J. Ford, who usually rides Exch« s quer. has ta v en the mount on the Wingatui-trained Exodus. Exodus weakened to fourth after pacemaking in the Pukemaori Hurdles on the second day of the Seu*hland winter meeting. That was only his second race for the season, so some improvement f'an be expected. Millins Bay may be the best of the li eh t-weights. He did not have the stamina to last out two miles on a heavy track on Monday, but the improvement in the going and the shorter distance should help him this time. Penl and Master David, both minor place-getters each time they raced earlier at the meeting, are the form horses for the Electric Stakes. There should be little between them, but Peril has had better fortune in the barrier draw and that could be important ever six furlongs. To Start in Hack Race Ben Ledi. a double acceptor, will meet the hacks in the Tainui Hack Handicap. He has 9st 101 b. but that may not stop him from winning. Under the same weight, he finished seventh ©ver seven furlongs on a heaw track on Moudav. The distance of the Tainui Hack Handicap is six furlongs. Berwick was just caught by Coinalot at the end of seven furlongs on Monday. He is a smart hack, and Ben Ledi will have to give of his very best to concede him 191 b. Brooksdale showed speed and had little luck in his race nn the first day. H° did well to finish fifth. Piccarton stables are strongly represented in the Domain Hack Handicap. with Iroqtaoi. Royal Display. Masai, and Sir Galahad among others fc the field. Iroquoi was running on for third, three and a half lengths behind Coinalot and Berwick in the Southern Han- : dican oh Monday. Coinalot has gone ltd 91b, but is still 7Tb below Iroquoi. and may again beat the Riccarton | mare. Royal Display has not been racing j consistently, but his Brighton Handi-1 cap success was a performance of merit. He did not show up on the • second day. but a second win for the meeting would not be beyond him if he does one of his best gallons. Masai was running on for fourth in ! the Brighton Handicap, and was • second over a mile and three furlongs ‘ in the race for amateur riders on Mon- ! day. If those two races have not dulled ■ his enthusiasm, he will ta v e beating Masai is a sta bl emate or Fleur, which will attemot to win the Aidworth I Hack Handicap with top weight of 9st 1 21b. Fleur won under B~t 7Tb last Saturday when she mouU=d a bril-: liant run from the rear, and beat Loyal Chief by half a length. Solstice, which also came from a long way back, was a creditable third, but the others were beaten off. The finish will probably concern those three horses again. The best of the others will probably be The Sloucher. which was fourth in the corresponding race on the first cay. To reach that place he had to pass many horses from the half-mile. Kasr-el-Nil ricked himself in his race on the first day of the meeting, and that accounted for his disappointing performance on Monday. He is not a certain starter in the Empire Handicap, but a final decision will be left untn tomorrow morning. 1035 am.—June Hurdles: Shirley’s Pride. Brutus. Powell) after • they had taken 28sec for the opening twc furlongs. Brutus (A. I. Powell) worked clear in : the run home to finish ahead of Thank i You (C. G. Low) and Colonel Argosy ; ■ tP. L. Fraser) at the end of a mile anc • a quarter. The last six furlongs took Imin J Solstice (G. W. Mein) and Strada (F H.
