LICENSING ACT BREACHES

GENERAL WARNING TO PUBLICANS

LYTTELTON COMMITTEE MEETS

A general warning to licensees of hotels who persistently infringe the licensing laws was issued by the chairman of the Lyttelton Licensing Committee (Mr Rex C. Abernethy, S.M.) at the annual meeting of the committee yesterday. One thing the committee would like to have mentioned was the issue of certificates of the fitness of applicants for publicans’ licences, he said. Some publicans kept the law exactly. Others had occasional lapses. Where a licensee was caught' on two or three occasions with 20 or 30 persons in the bar after hours, then it could be said that he was not a good publican, and the matter should be watched when he next applied for a certificate of fitness. If his conduct was deemed unsatisfactory, then a certificate might be refused. The police renort to the committee, presented by Senior-Sergeant J. L. Graham, said that, on the whole, the conduct of the hotels in the district was satisfactory.
