USE OF ATOMIC BOMBS

Sir, —How is Viscount Montgomery, that very bloodthirsty Christian, going to decide when aggression has taken place? If unruly tribes in Western New Guinea attack the Dutch authorities, should a hydrogen bomb be dropped on Jakarta? Should atom bombs be dropped on Cairo and Tel Aviv on alternate days of every week? We can hardly expect anyone, especially the New Zealand delegate, to support the bombing of Pretoria when Strydom grabs South-west Africa; and all the other current^aggressors are “terrorists” who, unspbrtingly, have no cities of their own worth bombing. But perhaps Montgomery is thinking of Moscow and Peking as the* recipients of the biggest bombs possible, and that could only finish civilisation.—Yours, etc., VARIAN J. WILSON. June 6, 1956.
