LENDING OF U.S. WARSHIPS
AUTHORITY SOUGHT FROM CONGRESS
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, June 6.
The United States Defence Department has asked Congress for authority to lend warships to friendly Powers in Europe and the Far East.
For Europe, the Navy asked permission to lend two submarines to Greece, two destroyers and two destroyer escorts to West Germany, two destroyer escorts to Portugal, and two destroyers to Spain. ' £ The Navy said that the vessels being made available to Greece, Portugal, and Germany will be valuable in boosting the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation defences by providing training opportunities.
The two destroyers proposed for Spain could form the nucleus of a modern naval force.
Pending in the Armed Services ComVnittee of the House of Representatives is a bill covering a Navy Department request for a two-year extension of existing authority to lend naval vessels to friendly Far Eastern nations. The bill also would raise the limit on the number of vessels that could be lent from .25 to 30. x
