ATOM BOMB FOR RESEARCH

N.Z. IGNORANCE OF PROJECT

PROFESSOR BULLEN’S COMMENT

(Neio Zealand Press Association)

. AUCKLAND, June 6. New Zealand had not been formally approached on the project for exploding atom bombs to determine the composition of the earth's structure, but he was surprised that scientists here were not fully aware of the proposal, said Professor K. E. Bullen in Auckland today. He was commenting on remarks made in Wellington yesterday by Dr. E. I. Robertson, of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. Professor Bullen said that a letter written by him, explaining the proposals in some detail, had been circulated in academies of science throughout the world. Copies had also been sent by the Union of Geodesy and Physics to representative scientists in all countries covered by the union. In addition to this, the letter had been published in the official journal of the Union of Geodesy and Physics. “In view of that. I am surprised that the Wellington scientists were not aware of the proposal,” he said. Professor Bullen returned to Sydney today.
