Renegade Frenchmen

Killed

(Rec. 8 p.m.) ALGIERS, June 6. Two renegade Frenchmen are reported to have been killed fighting their countrymen m a sweep made against the rebels last night.

One of the dead men was said to be Henri Maillot. a 28-year-old officer cadet, who was sentenced to death by a military court last month for deserting to the Nationalists vffith a lorry load of arms.

He was described at the time as a militant Communist.

The other man was identified as Henri Leban, who taught in a school at Biskra on the edge of the Sahara until he was ordered to leave Algeria last year. He then disappeared and, according to the Algerian Communist Party’s newspaper, created a ‘‘Communist Maquis?’ An expulsion order was found on the body.

Death at Fencing.— A fencing champion, Andre Touzard, died in hospital in Paris v last night an hour and a half after an opponent’s foil had struck him in the stomach and cut his side.— Paris. June 4.
