For Crippled Children

The Canterbury and West Coast] branch of the New Zealand Crippled Children Society makes little call' od the generosity of citizens to support its valuable social work. it appreciates legacies, (gifts of money and additions to its (membership, it asks the public only 'to contribute to its annual rag drive. (The proceeds from this collection I finance a wide variety of services ;to more than 600 physically handicapped children—and no service greater than helping these boys and girls to realise that they can be

useful and accepted members of society. An official organisation I could not perform this service so i well, because it depends, largely, not on the specific help that is given but on the way it is given. Cheerjfnl informal, friendly assistance in (the big problems of transport and •assistance in education, in healthy recreation, in teaching hobbies and • skills. in finding suitable jobs, and Jin many other ways, benefits the children directly. Indirectly it helps • them, too. by relieving parents of some of their worries, thus' making ilhe homes of the boys and girls

• brighter. Householders can share !in this noble work very easily by giving old rags worth little to them, ' but amounting in total to a very ■ useful source of income. Last year ' 100 tons of rags produced £ 1600: and 'this year’s drive will be equally successful if the society gets the cooperation it should be able to expect ifrom a community grateful for ’unobtrusive but unwearying good , work.
