LA SALLE STRING QUARTET

TWO CHRISTCHURCH CONCERTS The La Salle String Quartet, a young American ensemble, will present two concerts in Christchurch on June 13 and June 20 under the auspices of the Christchurch Chamber Music Society. The quartet was formed in 1946 at the Juillard School of Music, and during its formative years gave recitals In New York city and its neighbourhood. After graduation from the Juillard fichooL the quartet was appointed to Colorado College, holding the position of quartet in residence for four years. Each spring the quartet goes’on a nation-wide tour, but its special aim is to provide the initial contact w’iih chamber music for the vast audience which has had little chance to hear this music before. This work has been carried out extensively with children, for whom the quartet gives special programmes in public and private schools with outstanding success. The members of the La Salle Quartet are:— Walter Levin, violin. He began his studies in Berlin and continued at Tel Aviv; formed a string quartet ■w hen he was 16, and has toured extensively in the Near East. Henry Meyer, violin. Soloist at the age of 10 with the Dresden Philharmonic. Member of the Prague String Quartet. Studied in Prague, Paris, and New York. Peter Kamnitzer. viola. Graduated from the Manhattan School of Music in New York and studied at the Juillard School under Milton Katims. Violist with the string quartet of the San Antonio Symphony. Jack Kirstein. ’cello. Solo ’cellist of the Little Orchestra Societv of New York and the Mozart Orchestra. As 1956 is the bi-centenarv of the birth of Mozart, the quartet will give an all-Mozart concert. Among interesting works which they will perform is the Schoenberg Quartet. No. 3.
