PARLIAMENTARY QUESTIONS

MINISTERIAL REPLIES ISSUED (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 5. The whole question of the possible establishment of savings banks within trading banks, trustee savings banks, and municipal banks was receiving the attention of the Government, said the Minister of Finance (Mr J. T. Watts) in a written reply to a question asked by Mr P. G. Connolly (Labour, Dunedin Central) towards the end of the first part of the Parliamentary session. Among the other replies were: The report of a special committee set up to bring forward a Dominion scheme for the tuberculin testing of all dairy stock has been given P re ” hminary consideration by the Cabinet and has been referred to a caucus committee for special investigation. The scheme for the testing of town supply herds has created some problems, but it is hoped to reach a decision soon on the outstanding matters—The Minister of Agriculture (Mr K. J. Holyoake) to Mr P. O. S. Skoglund (Opposition, Palmerston North). Some police women are gaining experience in police work under supervision at the four main centres. Twenty of them will attend a course at the Police Training School, Trentham, this year, and on completion of the course they will be sent to various police districts —The Minister of Police (Mr Holland) to Mr C. L. Carr (Opposition. Timaru).

The Government is endeavouring to overcome the shortage of new motorcars by making as mufch overseas exchange available as circumstances permit. In times of abnormal demand such as the present it would seem desirable that the industry should not “over-tool.” and I consider that it can best be left to the industry to decide the plants needed to meet normal demand—The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr H. Halstead) to Mr J. M. Deas (Opposition, Otahuhu).

When the committee which is at present inquiring into the feasibility of inter-island transmission of electric power has completed its task, there would seem to me to be no reason why this question should not be discussed in accordance with the normal policy of the Broadcasting Service by panels of informed and competent commentators—The Minister in charge of Broadcasting (Mr R. M. Algie) to Mr N. J. King (Opposition, Waitemata).
