OLYMPIC GAMES DECORATIONS
; SPECTACULAR DESIGNS FOR MELBOURNE a An expert design panel has evolved I a spectacular decorative scheme for j Melbourne during the Olympic Games. r Each design will employ only Olympic colours, black, blue, green, 5 yellow and red, and will have moving parts so constructed that they will 1 catch and reflect light by day and night. ; Above the busy Swanston street- . Flinders street intersection will hang ! a silvered torch, 60 feet in height and weighing two tons. At night it will give the impression of a flaming torch - floating high above the city. At three points above Swanston street huge revolving wheels will swing above the roadway and reflect sunlight and night lights. Symbolic decorations will be
featured on all important highways leading to the main Games sites. At the northern entrance to the city, a gaily-festooned 150-foot-high steel pylon will be set in the centre of the traffic roundabout. It will carry a series of spheres, symbolising the Olympic rings, and the flags of more than 70 nations represented at the Games. The intersection of Spring street, Flinders street and Wellington parade will be marked by a “Gateway to the Olympics,” a series of cigar-shaped pylons, 40 feet high and decorated with coloured banners.
