Hit Parade Achieves Note By Victories At Ellerslie

; RACING

Hit Parade, the glamour horse of i the Auckland Racing Club's winter meeting, and probably one of-the best < jumpers produced in the North Island i for several years, has accomplished a 1 task previously achieved by only four horses—winning the Great Northern J Hurdles-Steeplechase double in one season. His hurdles success was particularly notable, for until Saturday Hit Parade had not started in a hurdle race. The first dual-winner of the Great Northern double in the one season ; was Mr P. Butlers Liberator, which was successful in 1895. An aged Betrayer—Diana gelding. Liberator was ridden by Freeman Holmes, later one of New Zealand's leading trotting trainers and drivers, who was then attached to the Butler stable. Holmes, who will celebrate his eighty-fifth birthday today, still takes an active interest in training at Riccarton. On most mornings, he can be seen riding Tarantella to and from the track. One of the most colourful horses i I associated with the two major jumping races was El Gallo, which as a five-year-old in 1915 won the big double, and repeated the performance the next year. Lochella <1920 and ‘ Sir Rosebery (1925) were also success- ; ful in both events in the one season. Other horses which have been sue- ■ . cessful in both races, but not in the . one season, were Sea De'il <1922-24). Beau Cavalier (1927-28). and Streamlire <1940-41). Hit Parade, a rugged eight-year-old bay gelding by Probation, was the 1947 foal of the Whirlwind mare Ada I Thangi. He was bred by Mr F. C. Yule at Carterton, and was purchased by Mr Higgnett. his Stratford ownertrainer. as a yearling at the 1949 Trentham sales for 90 guineas. It was a very small outlay'for the £II.OOO he has won in stakes. Hit Parade was not raced as a two-year-old. He made his initial appearance as a three-year-old in a maiden race at the Marton Jockey Club's summer meeting on January’ 1. 1951. He • had four other starts that season, but was unsuccessful. In the next two seasons, as a four and five-year-old. Hit Parade con- \ tested seven races on the fiat but was • unplaced. At his last start in the i 1952-53 season. Hit Parade was switched to steeplechasing, and although he was again unplaced, he showed aptitude in his new role. His ability as a jumper became evi- : dent early in the 1953-54 season, for ■ at his first start as a six-year-old. Hit ! Parade finished third behind Slieve p loom and Barkeley in the Trial Hunters’ Steeples on the first day of the Taranaki-Egmont-Wanganui Hunt meeting on August 15. He was also third in the Taranaki Hunt Cup Steeples on the second day of the meeting. Hit Parade recorded two further placed performances at Egmont and Taranaki before he gained the. first ; success o f his career in the Grand- ! stand Steeplechase on the second day jof the Taranaki Jockey Club’s winter | meeting on May 22. His only other placing from 11 starts that season was fourth in the Wanganui Steeplechase. Recent Successes Last season. Hit Parade contested 12 races for three wins and four placings. His wins were gained in the Jockey Club Steepler at the Taranaki Jockey and Hunt Clubs’ combined meeting. ’ the Bertram Memorial Steeples at I Rotorua, and after his sensational fall :at the last fence when success seemed • assured in the G r eat Northern ■ Steeples, the Winter Steeplechase on : the third day of the Auckland Racing I Club’s winter meeting. His most important placed efforts during the season were his second to ; Aligarh in the Wellington Steeple- ; chase, and a second to Pictavia Boy Jin the Waikato Steeplechase. His I stake winnings for the season were | £4205. Hit Parade opened the current season by running third to Wattie and Trench Fighter in the Hunt Cup Steenles at the Pakuranga Hunt Club’s meeting at Ellerslie on August 27. I After an unplaced performance in the i Waikato Hunt Cun Steeplechase in October, he was put aside before beginning a preparation for his present campaign. Hit Parade’s only other start before his Great Northern triumph was last month in the Waikato Steeplechase, which he won decisively from Wattie and Golden Brown. His stake earnings for the current season amount to £6325. To Race at Awapuni Undergrowth, which will have his first test in open company in the Stewards’ Handicap at the Manawatu Racing Club’s winter meeting at Awapuni on Saturday, left Riccarton on the first stage of the journey north yesterday. Undergrowth, which is trained by K. J. Thomson for Mr H. D. Greenwood. has compiled an outstanding record in his six starts to date, having won four times and been placed second tw’ice. The three-year-old Un-derwood-Sanskrit gelding should not find sucess in the higher grade very difficult. He is in the right order to continue his winning sequence. A win in the open sprint on either day of the Manawatu meeting would make Undergrowth eligible to start in the Whyte Handicap on the first day of the Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting, which will open on July 7. Plans for Assembly

. Assembly, which won the Winter ■ | Handicap on the first day of the I I Dunedin Jockey Club’s winter meet- I | ing last Saturday, and finished sec- ' ond to Brooke in the Members’ Handicap on Monday, returned to Ric- ; carton yesterday. The four-year-old Royal Commission gelding, which gained his first win in Mr A. S. Elworthy’s colours ' on Saturday, is trained at Riccarton : by J. L. Barr. Present plans are , ■hat Assembly and his stablemate. Desperado, will race next at the Wei- : lington Racing Club’s meeting next month. Jimmy Flash, another member of . Barr’s team, which had been blistered ond put aside after showing signs of weakness in a suspensory ligament iust before the Banks Peninsula meeting, in March, has rejoined the ‘earn and has been doing road-work. r t is unlikely that the three-year-old Picta via-Kingship colt, which raced solidly earlier in the season to gain ‘wo wins and nine placings from 14 starts, will reappear again before the National meeting. X.Z. Relatives The three place-getters in the Oaks Trial Stakes, run last week in Eng!and, and won by No Pretender, all lave connexions in New Zealand.

The winner is a bay filly by Nearco ■ rom Phase, and is therefore a sister ‘ •o the Oaks winner Netherton Maid he dam of Chatsworth, the latest addition to the Alton Lodge Stud. The runner-up. Garden State, is • oy the promising young Nearco sire. rCrakotoa, from a mare by the good Australian horse Bemborough. The hifti place-getter. Fairy Grove, traces m her dam’s side to the great pro- ! iucer Trustful. So do the Stony- ; nurst sire Royal Commission and the : -ecently-imported stallion Astraeus. Calcutta Sweep in Work Calcutta Sweep, which was spelled m a farm near Levin after the Welington Racing Club’s autumn meeting n March, rejoined the Riccartori stable of F. A. Roberts last month. The four-year-old Royal Chiefbun jab gelding has done well during lis spell, and is carrying plenty of condition. Calcutta Sweep, which

does not appreciate winter conditions, will be prepared for spring racing, and may make his first appearance in the new season on the latter days of the Grand National meeting. Calcutta Sweep won his way out of hack class at’the last New Zealand Cup meeting, and was successful in the higher grade in the Wairarapa Cup at Tauherenikau on December 31. Another member of the Roberts’s team which has been spelling is Dhofar. which was put aside for a month after the Easter meeting at Riccarton. The Oman-Auldana filly resumed training a fortnight ago and like her stablemate, will be prepared for spring racing. Change of Stables Strato, which was formerly trained by P. H. C. Stock at Orari for Mr R. C. Idiens, was left with the Wingatui trainer. D. Dawson, and will be tried as a jumper. The Newtown Pipin six-year-old has been taken over by Mr H. A. Sherborne. the owner of Flying Symbol, a half-brother to the McLean Stakes winner Rustler. Strato was third to Privy Council and Paulette in the last C.J.C. Stewards’ Handicap, and also won the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Flying Handicap and the Greymouth Cup this season.

season. Mr G. J. Barton’s Team The successful trainer-jockey, L. W.; Hare, will take charge of Mr G. J. Barton’s team "at Wingatuivwhile A. I. Powell is campaigning in Australia with Ark Royal and his selected stablemates. In addition to his own horses. Hare will have in his team Brutus, Peril. Wandon. Red Tinge, and either one of the yearlings Black Star or All Fair. ACCEPTANCES DUNEDIN CLUB (New Zeaiana Press Association) DUNEDIN, June 5.
