“DISAPPOINTING” MUSTER AT COACHING EVENING

rugby football

Disappointment that only about 30 eoacnes attended a coaching evening held recently was expressed by members of the management committee of the Canterbury Football Union at its meeting last evening. “We now Inow what to do next year when they Ptart singing out at the annual meeting.” said Mr W. C. Dailey. Mr L. G Loveridge reported that the meeting had been addressed by the two Canterbury selectors (Messrs J. fe. Morton and N. J. McPhail) and the referees’ association’s representative on the m?nagement committee (Mr S. Whiteford). It was a very instructive evening, and it was disappointing to see only about 30 coaches. “We do not want to give in. so I suppose we will try again.” he said. Mr Whiteford agreed that it was one of the most instructive nights he had attended. The lectures of Messrs Morton and McPhail warranted a full house, he said. FREE SEATS AT MATCHES The New Zealand Rugby Union in a circular advised that the followin'.: persons were eligible for free seats at the Springbok matches in the respective unions:— Local executive, two seats eachlocal president, two; local life members, two each; local selectors, two each; local president of the referees’ association, two; members of the NewZealand council, two each; New Zealand life members, two each; New Zealand past presidents, two each; New Zealand selectors, two each (including the island selectors in the particular island); New Zealand president of the New Zealand Referees’ Association two; the referee, two. In addition’ there will be 30 free seats to be used at the local union’s discretion. Plavers in the local team will also re ceive two tickets each. Other advice con’ained in the circular was as follows: Balls.—Three balls are to be used in the Springbok matches. They are to be of New Zealand manufacture and of four panels. Line Umpires.— One of the visiting team would act as a line umpire and the local referees’ association would be expected to provide the other. In-goal Areas.— Unions were asked tn see that there were no seats or other material that could be dangerous in close proximity to the in-goal areas and that every effort should be made to orevent encroachment on to the feld of play. This advice will be passed on to the Victory Park Board. ENTERTAINMENT FOR SPRINGBOKS Two offers to entertain the South African team were received. One Was from the Canterbury Agricultural College. Lincoln, which suggested that the students from Stellenbsoch University and farmers in the team might like to visit the college during their stay m Christchurch. The visit would provide interesting and stimulating relaxation for the players, said the letter.

Mr C. W. McKeegan said he understood the team would also be invited train at the college if it wished. The Templeton Country Club offered the use of its golf course to the Springboks. and suggested that opponents could also be found for them and other entertainment arranged if sufficient notice was given.
