U.S. ROCKET TEST AGAIN FAILS
AEROBEE CRASHES IN DESERT (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) WHITE SANDS (New Mexico), June 4. A United States Navy Aerobee rocket flamed out at a height of only 37 miles today and crashed into the desert, spoiling a scheduled test of the sun’s magnetic storms. The parachute that was to have dropped the rocket gently to earth failed to operate properly, and delicate recording devices, were smashed to fragments. This was the second of three scheduled Aerobee rocket exhibitions open to the newspapers. The first test, which was staged just after interservice squabbling had begun over missile production and development, also failed when the rocket flamed out and crashed. * In today’s test, cameras stored in the rocket’s nose were to have photographed the sun from the most distant edge of the earth’s atmosphere, a point from which the sun never has been studied before. The missile was to have soared at least 130 miles into space, but its motor stopped working at a height of 37 miles.
