BOY MAULED BY ZOO LION
Both Arms Amputated (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, June 4 An 11-year-old boy had both arms amputated in hospital last night after being mauled by a lion at Whipsnade Zoo, Bedfordshire.
The boy Tony Murphy, was on an outing to the zoo with a party of Wolf Cubs from London’s East End. After having tea near the lion pit, some of the boys wandered off to get a closer look at the three lionesses and the lion.
Tony apparently climbed a fence surrounding the pit, and tried to attract the attention of one of the animals with a stick.
The lion is believed to have seized one of the boy’s arms with its claws and mouth, then grabbed the other in the same way.
A police officer said: “Some of the boys ran off and told the Rev. Ronald Aylward, who was in charge of the party. He immediately climbed the fence and hit the lion with an iron bar.”
The lion immediately released the boy. who was rushed to hospital. The boy also has deep lacerations of the chest and face. The police said, he had a “good chance” of survival.
