AUTOMATION IN U.S.
Claims By Car Workers
(Rec. 8 p.m.) DETROIT. June 3. Mr Walter Reuther, president of the United Auto Workers’ Union, said today that automation and the harnessing of nuclear energy could create the kind of economic abundance out of which we can get higher living standards and at the same time a shorter work week and greater leisure.
A shorter working week, increased compensation for lay-off periods, and higher pensions will be among the aims of his 1.000.000-strong union when its present contracts with the manufacturers expire in 1958, he added.
Mr Reuther said that automatic: would “make it possible very shortly to provide the people of this country with higher living standards.” He urged the creation of a permanent committee, with representatives from the Government, companies and unions, to make a continuous study of the broad impact of automation.
