Mrs Vivian Fuchs, wife of the British polar explorer. Dr. Vivian Fuchs, yesterday christened the 1650-ton polar ship Magga Dan, which is to be the flagship of the British Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic expedition.
Dr. Fuchs, the expedition’s leader, 1 watched his wife break a bottle of I North Sea water—symbolising the I close relations between Denmark and Britain —to christen the ship. The Magga Dan—said to be the most modern research ship in the world—will make her maiden voyage to Greenland in September on a trial run By November she will be loading stores in London ready for her voyage to the Antarctic. The Magga Dan is about twice the size of the Theron, which last year took Dr. Fuchs, Sir Edmund Hillary and their party out to the Antarctic.
