INTER UNIVERSITY TOURNAMENT
CANTERBURY LOSES TO OTAGO
Otago University won the men’s foil by 11 bouts to 5, the sabre by 11 bouts to 5. and the women’s foil by 7 bouts to 2, in its annual fencing tournament with Canterbury University College, held at Canterbury College at the week-end. Two outstanding fencers in the men’s foil event were M. J. Tait (Otago) and D A. Baughan (Canterbury), both of whom are New Zealand University fencing representatives. Tait won all three of his bouts, and no points were scored against him. Baughan won two bouts and lost two.
Held for the first time as an official contest, the sabre event produced fencing of a consistently high standard. Otago’s greater experience and better training were instrumental in its win. For Otago. Miss P. Woodhams fought well to win her three bouts. Canterbury, mainly a junior team, gave its more experienced opponents many close bouts. Results were:—
Men’s Foil.—Otago: M. J. Tait, 4 wins, no losses: S. Chau, 3 wins, 1 loss; C. Musgrave, 3 wins, 1 loss; D. Marples, 1 win. 3 losses. Canterbury: D. A. Baughan, 2 wins, 2 losses; G. Speight, no wins, 3 losses; A. Brewis, 1 win, 3 losses; I. Buckingham, 2 wins, 2 losses.
Sabre.—Otago: M. Tait, 4 wins, no losses; S. Chau, 3 wins, 1 loss; D. Marples, 3 wins, 1 loss; C. Musgrave. 3 losses, 1 win. Canterbury: Y. Van Royen, 3 losses, 1 win; A. Brewis, 3 losses, 1 win; D. Baughan, 1 loss, 3 wins; I. Buckingham, 4 losses.
Women’s Foil.—Otago: P. Woodhams. 3 wins, 0 losses: M. Tilby, 2 wins, 1 loss; A. Ross, 2 wins, 1 loss. Canterbury: M. Grimmett, 1 win, 2 losses; H. Dalrymple, 1 win, 2 losses: N. Finlayson, 3 losses.
