BUENOS AIRES, June 3. An entirely new air route across the Antarctic, linking Australia and New Zealand with Europe by way of Argentina is under serious consideration by Canadian Pacific Airlines, the president of the airline (Mr G. W. G. McConachie) reports. “Such a route would actually be slightly shorter than existing routes from Australia and N e w Zealand to Europe,” Mr McConachie said. The route would involve one stop on the South Polar ice, he said. “But that presents no problem when it is considered that C.P.A. has successfully operated its Arctic route from Vancouver to Amsterdam for the lasyear.”
Mr MpConachie made his statemen; at a recent press conference in Buenos Aires held after the completion of a special pre-inaugural flight by Canadian Pacific Airlines from Canada to Argentina as a prelude to the inauguration on June 1 of a passenger service from Buenos Aires to Lima and thence to Mexico City, Vancouver, E C., and Toronto.
Mr McConachie also said that his airline believes that Latin American airline fares are “too high” and Canadian Pacific will propose a 25 per cent, reduction at the forthcoming international air transport meeting at Cannes. France.
He further stated that preliminary studies indicate the feasibility of instituting a “pay later” plan for air travel to and from Argentina, which has no such plan at present.
