QUEENSTOWN MOVE FOR NEW HOTEL

LICENSEES’ OPPOSITION (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, June 4. A threat to take business away from the Queenstown Borough Council, and also from four storekeepers who are members of the council, has been made by the Queenstown Licensed and Private Hotel Proprietors’ Association, because of the council’s attitude towards it in the agitation for a Gov-ernment-owned hotel. The association was strongly opposed to the council’s policy of pressing for the building of such a hotel, said Mr J. McDonald, president of the association, today. So far the council had received, but ignored, all correspondence on this matter. He said the council “is cutting the ground from under our feet.” Mr McDonald said that the new hotel could be “just as big as a white elephant as the hotel at Milford.” The Town Clerk (Mr M. T. Robertson) said today that the council had a strong case. The policy was to get more and better accommodation in the town. He said the council felt confident the agitation for the hotel would succeed.
