MINOR EVENTS AT ASHBURTON

MAYFIELD HANDICAP TO SCOTT’S OWN Scott's Own won his sixth race for the season when he finished on to beat Wilton Lad in the Mayfield Handicap at Ashburton yesterday. Jaquine and Sword Lass made mostCof the pace, but with five furlongs to run Rapuwai and Suredale were the leaders. Rapuwai was clear ’turning for home. Scott’s Own. after making up his handicap of 84 yards, was challenging Rapuwai at the furlong post, with Assure and Suredale handiest of the others, and Wilton Lad continuing a strong run. Scott's Own took the measure of Rapuwai with half a furlong to run. and won well by a length. Wilton Lad. a first-day winner, made up a lot of ground over the final six furlongs. and he was closing on Scott’s Own at the post Ranuwai, which broke at the start, trotted a fine race to finish third, eight lengths in front of Suredale, with four to Assure, with a gap to Jaquine, Honora’s Last and Quite Contrary. Showdown Brilliant Showdown returned an outstanding effort to win his second race at the meeting in the Tinwald Handicap. He broke at the start and was very slow alter settling down. He was at least 100 yards from the leaders at the end of a furlong and a half, but he sprinted up to be about 12 lengths from the leaders at the end of five furlongs. Capull made most of the pace, but broke and dropped out with five furlongs to run. Black Gem was left in front then, but Showdown moved through on the inner to lead at the straight entrance. He was five lengths in front of Next Time at the furlong, with Placid Girl and Black Gem next. Showdown was not troubled to increase his advantage to 15 lengths at the post. Placid Girl, which was handy over the last mile and a half, fought on for second, a length in front of Black Gem. Banquier, which lost a big stretch of ground at the start, showed speed to finish fourth, a length from Black Gem. with Young Reta a good fifth, clear of Warranty and Surie Queen. Jungle Song broke and fell in the first furlong. Favourite Wins Compo Jack, a hot favourite, made short work of his opponents in the Acton Handicap. Compo Jack was handy early, but he was pushed back several places at the end of five furlongs. He moved up to be fifth with six furlongs to run. Brooklyn Star and Peter Polo forced most of the pace. Brooklyn Star was clear over the last five furlongs. Compo Jack burst clear racing to the final furlong, w :i ere he was followed by Signor, Brooklyn Star. Quo Vadis and Dinnie Daley. Compo Jack was under a strong hold over the last half-furlong, and won easing up by four lengths. Signor was slow away, but was handilv placed over the last mile. He finished on without appearing likely to trouble the winner. Quo Vadis. w'hich had every chance, battled on for third, a length from Signor, ard nine lengths in front of Glenaimar, which made up some ground. Gold Deoro was a neck back fifth, well clear

of Preston Lad and Dinnie Daley. Pennytare, Zagar, Quicksand and Hazel Grattan made mistakes in the earlyrunning. Madam Peterson Stays On Madam Feterson took the lead at the end of five furlongs in the two-mile Trial Handicap, and the Light Brigade three-year-old shook off several challenges over the last seven furlongs to ouistay the others most decisively. Resolution moved up to Madam Peterson at the seven-fur-long post, and shaded her racing to the straight. However. Madam Peterson came again on the inside to lead into the final furlong clear of Trojan, with a gap to Medalius and Fontenoy. Madam Peterson did not look like surrendering her lead, and won with something in hand by four lengths. Fontenoy, which had broke and lost a lot of ground at the start, made up ground for second, two lengths in front of Trojan, which had been in a trailing position for most of the race. Resolution could make no impression in the run home, and was beaten off fourth, clear of Peteria. Chanter, Medalius and the surprise favourite. Lord Argyle, which failed to flatter his supporters. Nirvana Wins Again Nirvana complete- . a Qvuuie for the meeting with another very easy win in the Longbeach Handicap. Nirvana dismayed his supporters when he broke at the start and lost about 36 yards. He settled down smartly, and gradually made up ground to be at the back of the leading bunch about 10 lengths from the pacemaker, Mickey Galindo, with six furlongs to run. He moved round the field racing to the straight, where he was very wide. He was on terms with Gentle Anna racing to the final furlong, with Loyal Eagle, Karingal, Judear. and Scotch Mist handiest of the others. Nirvana soon ' took the measure of Gentle Anna, and he came on to win easily. Gentle Anna trotted her usual sound race, but was a little slow early. She was five lengths in front of Scotch Mist, which finished on ahead of a tired lot. Karingal was four lengths away fourth, clear of Judear, with two lengths to Kilmartin, which broke with two furlongs to run. Thumberlina and Loyal Eagle. Shiann. the 3, 3 favourite, was among those to break at the start.
