CONFERENCE OF MAORIS
MORE SEATS WANTED IN PARLIAMENT
A remit that additional seats be provided in the House of Representatives for Maoris and that the Southern Maori electorate be confined to the South Island, was passed at the conference of South Island Maoris which concluded at the Addington Show Grounds yesterday. It was decided to make the conference an annual one in order to stimulate interest in Maori affairs. It will be held next year at Invercargill. The Government will be requested to establish a South Island section of the Maori Land Court at Christchurch.
Some speakers expressed criticism of the way in which justice was being administered to some Maoris. The conference passed a remit urging that Maori juries be appointed for the trial of Maoris before the Supreme Court. It was also recommended that one male and one female Maori justice of the peace be appointed in each of the city areas of ( the South Island.
