Dusty Miller Beats The Tongs In Otago Hurdles

RACING

(From Our Own Reporter)

DUNEDIN. June 4. The Tongs, winner of the Otago Steeplechase on Saturday, was within inches of victory in the Otago Hurdles at Wingatui today. He was beaten by Dusty Miller, which had not won before over hurdles. Dusty Miller won a Riverton Cup and an Invercargill Gold Cup for his Riverton ownertrainer, M. Corkery. earlier in his career. He showed ability to win today. losing five lengths or so when another runner fell in front of him near the five furlongs. The Tongs was clear after that mixup, but Dusty Miller had the stronger gallop and wore the top-weight down in the straight.

Dusty Miller was ridden bv the Riccarton jockey, J. w. McDonald. Horatius. an undistinguished ninth in the Birthday Handicap on Saturday, put supporters of the form horses on the wrong foot by winning the Provincial Handicap, the' first leg of the double. W. D. Skelton sent Mr J. M. Samson’s Foxbridge four-vear-old clear at the half-mile and into a lead of four lengths on the home turn. Ballast reduced the lead considerably, but was a length behind at the post. ’ This was Horatius’s first win at his fourth attempt in open company. He is a galloper of some ability, but' needs "]enty of racing room and does not .-ive of his best when other horses are running outside him. Trained earlier by G. Ridgway at Tauherenikau, Horatius Is now in the Wingatui*stable of F. T. Anning. Brooke rounded off the day’s double by winning the Members’ Handicap for his Southland owner, Mr W. Swale. He was a better horse for his race than on the first day of the meeting, end finished too strongly for Saturday’s winner, Assembly, which ran clear from a trailing position early in the run home.

The Horatius-Brooke combination carried 80$ 10s tickets and paid £370 4s for £l. In a pool of £18,029 10s Horatius carried 1103 10s tickets on the first leg.

Culton. an Otago Hurdles winner earlier in his career, won the Wingatui Steeplechase comfortably for his Invercargill owner-trainer, T. M. Timp?ny. The way was made easy for him when King Simper broke down after landing over the last fence in front. King Simper was very lame after the race, and his future must be very uncertain. Culton is a nine-year-old Man’s Pal ge’ding. He is useful in bad ground, won o'’er country at the ivertcn Easter meeting, and has also been a consistent place-getter as a Bteeplechaser.

Battling Finish Dusty Miller and The Tongs had a battling finish to themselves in the Ctago Hurdles. The Tongs gained a slight lead with a better leap at the last flight, but Dusty Miller had that extra bit of speed that gave him a head victory. It was a margin he would have widened had he not struck trouble when a horse fell in front of him at the third last flight. Dusty Miller was eased to the roar ear y in the race, but J. W. McDonald took him forward running through the straight for the first time, and he joined Lo Night in front going to the mile, where Lovelock fell.

In a close-running field going down the back Danger Point moved fast on. the outer to join Exchequer and Milling Bay going to the five furlongs, but he fell there and Lo Night went over the top of him. Dusty Miller and Brutus both lost ground in the mixup. and by the time they w*ere balanced again The Tongs was in front, with Milling Bav and Exchequer closest ’to him. 'Dusty Miller and Brutus were four lengths back, but Dusty Miller was galloping strongly. Dusty Miller was alongside The Ton’s on the home turn and held a short lead when starting the last furlong, but The Tongs jumped the last flight better and was in front for a few strides on landing. Exchequer was six and a half lengths back third, and the weakening Brutus was nine lengths back fourth. Milling Bay was five lengths behind Brutus. Clear Lead Horatius ran into a clear lead near the half-mile in the Provincial Handicap and won by a length from Ballast, which made up about five lengths from the home turn. Good Abbot was third under top weight of 8-10, and Kiaree Beau shaded Baffling Eyes and Soumai for fourth. Bosky ran clear near the mile, but Horatius joined him in the back straight. Six furlongs out, Royal Voyage, Good Abbot, Overboard and Ballast were closest to the leaders. Patris was also handy, but three wide with Baffling Eyes alongside. Horatius snot clear by two lengths near the half-mile and Bosky went back through the field quickly, leaving Patris to run clear in second position at the three furlongs. The second favourite. Overboard, was beaten then and Patris could make no impression on Horatius. Ballast moved past Patris near the home turn but Horatius led him by four lengths. Ballast kept going strongly, but had too much leeway to make up. Gpod Abbot was three and a half | lengths back and there was a bigger : gap to Kiaree Beau, which filled the i same position in the Birthday Handi- I cap. Baffling Eyes and Soumai were I practically in line with Kiaree Beau, then there was a gap of two lengths to Lucky Bill, the extreme outsider of the field. Patris, which does not gallop well on the inner, but was there on the home turn, was a weakening eighth ahead of Happy, Royal Voyage, Gazette, Bosky, Cock Crow and Overboard. Second Leg Brooke closed strongly on Assembly ; in the straight and won the Members’ ■ Handicap, the second leg of the double, by a length and a half. He was about five places back on the turn and had only Assembly to catch from the furlong. Assembly trailed closely on the inner from the start. He ran past Silver King with ease on straightening up and had what looked to be a winning lead outside the furlong, but Brooke put more dash into his finish than he did on Saturday and had the race in hand at the half furlong. Golden Morn, which was alongside Assembly on the home turn, battled I on for third two lengths back, and i three lengths clear of Rathkeale, which ; also had her chance. Canasta the last away, showed speed to finish fifth, although she reached the end of her run a furlong out. Dahlia was sixth after being alongside the winner for a good way. The win favourite. Adversary, was second to last out of the stalls and did not show uo after. He finished twelfth. Kasr-el-Nil, the place favourite, led momentarily early, but dropped right out in the straight and finished tenth, just behind the weakening Silver Kmg.
