KEARNS WINS FINAL FROM ATKINSON INTERMEDIATE TITLE TO R. GRIMSHAW R. D. Kearns, who played third for Canterbury in this year s Freyberg rosebowl tournament. added another success to his impressive record when he won the senior championship at the Russley Ciubs annual Queen’s Birthday tournament yesterday. In the final he beat R. K Atkinson, a 19-year-old player of exceptional promise. 2 up. Heavy rain and drizzle made conditions extremely difficult. Kearns and Atkinson halved the first two holes in s’s. and Atkinson won the third hole with a birdie 2. At the sixth Atkinson missed a six-foot putt to dron a stroxe and lose the lead. K?ams went to 1 up at the eighth, but Atkinson squared the match at the ninth. The next three ho es were halved in scratch figures. Kearns won the thirteenth with a scratch 5, only to lose the next two holes to scratch figures. The match was squared again when Atkinson three-putted at the sixteenth Kearns won the seventeenth with a bircie 3- and Atkinson conceded the mat. h when Kearns put his third shot eight inches f. o~n the hole at the eighteenth. The intermediate championship was wen by R. Grimshaw, who beat A. B 8001. 2 and 1. After nine holes Booi I was 2 up, but Grimshaw began the second half very well, scoring scratch figures at the first five holes to put him 1 up. From that stage each player had opportunities, and Grimshaw clinched the game at the ■even teen th. E. S. F. Holland beat A. S. Leighton. 1 up. to win the junior championship. Play was excellent, with long drives and seconds that went early to the greens even on long holes. Holland’s approaches were good, but his putting was a little i erratic. Silk, of Wanganui, won his fourth North Island golf championship todav ■t Mount Maunganui when he beat R. A. Court (New Plymouth) in the final. Silk held the upper hand throughout, winning the first three holes in scratch figures before he missed a 15in putt and a hooked second on the long sixth by Silk enabled Court to win two holes.
