WARNING BY MARSHALL

Talks On Future Of Singapore

(Rec. 10 p.m.) SINGAPORE. June 4. Mr David Marshall. Singapore’s Chief Minister, today warned Sir Anthony Eden that Singapore “would not go back to London to swallow its own vomit.**

Mr Marshall, who failed to win independence for the colony during the London talks last month, said this at his final weekly press conference. The r Chief Minister said he planned to resign this week after he reports to the Assembly on the failure of his London mission.

In a comment on Sir Anthony Eden’s speech at Norwich Mr Marshall said: “You can tell that to Sir Anthony Eden when he says the set-back is a comma, not a fullstop.” Mr Marshall continued: “I have read the reports of the’ Prime Minister’s speech at Norwich and I am unhappy that he is lending himself to Colonial Office cant If he would trouble to read five letters exchanged between his Secretary of State for the Colonies (Mr Alan Lennox-Boyd) and myself, he would find there are only two outstanding issues: the appointment of a Malayan Governor-General for Singapore and the transfer of authority from the Colonial Office. How in the name of simple truth can it be suggested that these two things affect internal security or external defence.” Mr Marshall added: “The British Government is committed to a very dangerous role and I would ask It to stand still for 15 minutes to look the truth in the face before it continues to suffer in hell.” He said that his appointment as president of the Labour Front meant he would not be able to interfere with his nominated successor, Mr Lim Yew Hock, but only to advise him. “The party still wants me as a symbol of the Labour Front.” he said. “They also wanted to express their devotion and respect.” ...... The Labour Front had decided to offer to form a new government only after a long debate. Mr Marshall said. One of the factors which swung the decision was the thought that although the present Constitution was bad. “run by a stooge government it would be ghastly.” He said he hoped the future government would be able to continue, the negotiations in London from a position of strength.

(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, June 3. England’s police are experimenting with the “drunkometer"—an American device which enables a person’s alcohol intake to be determined from analysis of his breath after he has blown up a balloon, according to a report in the “Daily Mail." A police surgeon in Buckinghamshire. where tests were carried out at a police training establishment after a constable had been heavily plied with whisky, said that in 10 minutes the “drunkometer” produced results which tallied with a laboratory analysis taking 24 hours. A senior official said the police were interested in the possibility of adopting “drunkometers” as standard police equipment.
