WORKERS FROM COVENTRY

Jobs In Canada Or N.Z.

LONDON. June 2.

Many of the 2640 Standard Motor Company workers awaiting dismissal because automation has made them redundant may find new jobs in Canada or New Zealand, it was reported today. Canadian migration officials are already scheduled to visit Coventry, where the Standard plant is situated, on June 21 and 22.

A Canadian official said: “We know from past experience that skilled workpeople in Coventry are really good. Many have gone to Canada and established themselves there. “The people we want include tool-makers mechanics, and other tradesmen."

The “News Chronicle” reported today that some laid-off workers were certain of permanent employment on New Zealand Railways, where diesel fitters, mechanics and machine lathe operators were badly needed.

A New Zealand House official said: Single men will find no difficulty in getting to New Zealand, and we can always fix them up with accommodation.

“The position is a bit more difficult for family men. They would have to be sure of accommodation before they could be accepted.”
