AID TO DROWNING MAN
CONSTABLE JUMPS INTO HARBOUR (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 3. Constable H. Couppieditch, of the Auckland wharf police, dived into the Waitemata Harbour and supported a drowning man for 15 minutes before they were dragged from the water at the city ferry terminal about 8.15 p.m. yesterday. For nearly two hours, St. John Ambulance men worked to revive the man. but he was finally pronounced dead. He was Petene Huirama Tukariri. aged 85, a
retired farmer, of Henderson.
“I was on my beat when I saw one of the ticket collectors pick up a lifebuoy and throw it into the water,” said Constable Couppieditch today. “I saw the man in the water was making no attempt to grab the line, So I stripped off my raincoat, tunic, helmet, and boots and dived in.”
After some difficulty, he managed to get the line around the man, and they were pulled toward the wharf by bystanders. Aged 24, Constable Couppieditch has been a member of the wharf police for a year. He has been in the force for about 18 months. He arrived in New Zealand from Cornwall, England, three years ago. and was farming before he joined the Police Force.
