HURUNUI United beat Waiau by 16 points to 3 in the first game of the second round in the Hurunui Sub-Union’s competitions. Tries were scored for United by B. Smith, J. Higgins, and P. Campbell. N. Ginders kicked one penalty goal and converted two tries. Cheviot beat Culverden 28-8. R. Dabinette scored a try for Culverden and J. Burrows converted. Burrows also kicked a penalty goal. Rugby, he said, helped in the development of a community spirit and comradeship among players, officials, and spectators Among notable early enthusiasts in „3f, smere Dr - Blair mentioned Dr. Wdhers, Dr - Hilgendorf, and Mr R. T McMillan. Ellesmere, he said, had produced five All Blacks, six South Island representatives, and 34 Canterbury representative players. Inwood, Mr McKeegan said that the occasion was a double anniversary—a golden jubilee for the Ellesmere Rugby SubUnion and a twenty-first anniversary for the Canterbury Rugby Sub-Unions as sueh. The Canterbury Rugby Sub-Union was the only organisation of its kind in New Zealand, and the Canterbury Rugby Union undoubtedly owed much of its strength to the country sub-unions, said Mr McKeegan.
