N.Z. Colt Knave Wins Stradbroke

PLACINGS TO KING’S FAIR AND TERANYAN (N.Z Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) BRISBANE, June 3. A hot favourite at 9 to 4, the New Zealand horse, King’s Fair was .unlucky to finish only third in the £lO,OOO Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm yesterday. T. C. Lowry’s three-year-old Knave won in record time for the race—lmin 24sec. The> Sydney sprinter, Teranyan, was second. The Stradbroke is the first leg of the big Stradbroke-Brisbane Cup double. King’s Fair was hopelessly blocked on the rails until the last furlong. When he aid get clear he made a great effort to catch the flying three-year-olds. Knave beat Teranyan in a photo finisn with King s Fair a length and a quarter away. The Sydney jockey Neville Sellwood was originally engaged to ride Knave, but was released from the engagement to take the mount on King’s Fair. The decision to start Knave in the Stradbroke was not made until after he won the Civic Handicap at Rosehill yesterday week. He was ridden yesterday by the Brisbane jockey, Syd Curran, who was engaged last Thursday. The New Zealand horses Decisive and Fair Chance were never real hopes in the running. They finished eighth ana sixteenth. Sellwood said later that King's Fair had been climbing all over the place in the early stages in an effort to get a clear run. He said that when he finally got a run about a furlong from home Knave and Terans-an were too far ahead. “1 managed to pick up some ground, but they were to far in front,” Sellwood said. King’s Fair was one of the early leaders, but was quickly passed by Maniana, Aboukir, Frifite, Kev Mar and Teranyan. Passing the half-mile. King’s Fair was boxed in on the rails in seventh place. He was still trying for a run through when seventh at the home turn, where Maniana just led from Aboukir. which ran to the front shortly afterwards, followed by Knave and Teranyan.

Both these horses were ridden right out and for a few strides it looked as though Teranyan would win. but Knave responded brilliantly and got up in the last few strides Redcraze Causes Upset The New Zealand stayer Redcraze caused a betting upset in the P. J. O'Shea Stakes, by winning from Electro and Prince Cortauld. In a fie’d of six in j the weight-for-age race, three horses were backed ahead of Redcraze. Redcraze was having his first start since i his return to Australia from New Zealand, and being taken over by the Sydney trainer T. J. Smith. He staged a great trial for tomorrow's Brisbane Cup and is sure to be one of the favourites for the two-mile race, as he finished brilliantly. He is in the cup with 9-0. Yesterday he carried 9-1. Half-way down the straight it looked like a race between Prince Cortauld. the leader, and Electro, coming home strongly from the rear of the field. With about 109 yards to go to the finish, Redcraze flashed through between them to win going away. It was a peculiar race, with the plodding stayer Oxley the early leader. The Worses ran little better than even time lor the first three furlongs. Then Sellwood dashed Prince Cortauld, which had missed the start about a length, and dropoed back to the rear, up to the front of the field to hustle them up. That made it a splendid race over the last half-mile with Redcraze • taking all the honours. Most elated person on the ground was Mrs J. B. Bradley, widow of the late owner of Redcraze. Mrs Bradley, who is nearly 80 years of age. flew alone from New Zealand only this week to see the gelding run yesterday and in the cup tomorrow. Two New Zealand horses. Matchlock and Deceptive, figured in a close finish in the Hamilton Handicap only to be beaten into minor placings. The race went to Avellino by a neck from Matchlock. with Deceptive a short neck away third.

Deceptive, which carried 9-3, comes down 51b in the Brisbane Cup. He could | have a chance in the big race, as he finished very fast yesterday. Matchlock was always in the picture and held second place throughout. El Khobar Succeeds The New Zealand colt El Khobar raced his way to favouritism for the Doomben Ten Thousand when he easily won a restricted race, the First Hawthorne Encourage. El Khobar, having only his second start in Australia, was never off the bit, and won the race in near-record time by 10 lengths. His time of Imin 124 sec was only lisec outside the record, but he could have improved his time greatly if he had been ridden out. His jockey, N. Sellwood, said that it had been one of the easiest wins he had ever had. El Khobar now has had four starts for two wins in New Zealanad and a first and a third in Queensland.
