STEEPLES WON BY HADFIELD

(New Zealand Press Association) WANGANUI. June 3. The Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter meeting opened on Saturday in fine but overcast weather, before a large crowd. The going was yielding after rain during the week.

The winning double. Xixies and Domitare. paid £136 16s for £l. The totalisator turnover was £63.267, compared with £56.157 last year, an increase of £7llO.

After the Suburban Hack Hurdles, E. Ropiha, trainer of Gay Cavalier, and J. N. Toki, the rider, were questioned before the judicial committee about the riding and the running of the horse, which finished fourth. The committee took into consideration the explanation that the horse was not at home in heavy ground, but reprimanded Toki for riding an ill-judged race. Routine swabs were taken from Footnote.
