Professor Arnold Toynbee, the British historian, will arrive in New Zealand next week for a short visit. He will reach Auckland from South America on May 17. He will give an address at Victoria University College on May 23 and will give a public lecture at. Auckland University College on May 24. Next day he will leave for Australia.— (P.A.) Dr. Francis J. Turner, a New Zealander who is a professor of geology at Berkeley University, California, has been elected to the United States National Academy of Sciences, the highest scientific honour in America. For some years Dr. Turner was on the staff of the University of Otago. He has won the Hector Medal, and is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand.—(P.A.) Mr J. E. Jones, chairman of the Christchurch Fire Board, will represent the board at the annual conference of the New Zealand Urban Fire Authorities’ Association on May 16. Dr. J. Restell Thomas and Dr. L. C. L. Averill comnleted 18 years of work for the North Canterbury Blood Transfusion Service last evening. In recent years they have represented the Canterbury Division of the British Medical Association on the committee of the service.
