MERCY FLIGHT TO DUNEDIN
CLUB PLANE TAKES INJURED MAN WATERSIDER DIES LATER “We have been using the Canterbury Aero Club for that sort of thing for many years, and its service has been first-class,’’ said the Medical Superintendent of the Christchurch Public Hospital (Dr. T. Morton) yesterday. On Saturday a seriously ill man was flown to Dunedin for a brain operation in a club Dragonfly aircraft. The man, who died, on Sunday, was Alan David Falconer, aged 33, a watersider, of 26 Parnwell street, Burwood. Mr Falconer was working at Lyttelton on the Meiwa Maru. a Japanese cargo ship, on Wednesday evening, when he fell 20ft from a hatch ladder into one of the ship’s holds. He was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital where it was suspected he had a hemorrhage in the brain, which could better be dealt with at the Dunedin Public Hospital. The club aircraft left Harewood Airport at 1.30 p.m. and arrived at Taieri at 3.10 p.m.. where it was met by an ambulance from the hospital. “Many patients would be unable to stand a road journey. An aircraft is quick and comfortable, and we can send a doctor with the patients should they require attention, on the way,” said Dr. Morton.
