Private Atom Power Stations In U.S.
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON, May 4. The Atomic Energy Commission today gave its official approval for construction of the first large-scale private atomic electricity stations in the United States. The two nuclear reactors authorised will cost an estimated 100.000.000 dollars. and are expected to be completed in 1960. The Consolidated Edison Company of New York was given a permit to build a 55.000.000-dollar station on a 350-acre site on the Hudson river about 24 miles north of New York city. The Commonwealth Edison Company. of Chicago, was issued a permit to build a 45.000.000-dollar station in Illinois, about 50 miles south-west of Chicago.
