BASKETBALL

NO FIJIAN TOUR OF N.Z. THIS YEAR A proposed tour of New Zealand by a Fijian basketball team will not now take place. Advice of this decision was received from the New Zealand Basketball Association at last evening s meeting of the Canterbury Basketball Association. The Christchurch Maori Youth Club and the Maori Community Centre were given permission to use a court for practice on Sundays, between 9.33 a.m. and 11 a.m. Speakers said that because of the lighting restrictions, that was the only tima available. Miss H. Yates said she was in favour of the proposal, provided the teams were correctly dressed in club uniforms. The Kaikoura Association asked for a representative match with Canterbury, and the meeting decided to invite Kaikoura to Christchurch on August 4. Mrs French asked if anything could be done to instruct player-referees in the rules. Executive members said that in recent weeks lower grade games had sometimes suffered from unusual decisions, and it was decided to prepare a list of rules for player-referees and to urge senior players to take a greater share of the refereeing. Selectors for representative teams were appointed as follows:—Senior, Miss H. Yates, Miss B. Stone, Mrs F. Gough; senior reserve, Mrs A. French, Mrs D. Hughes, Mrs A. Nichol: second grade, Mrs P. Lee. Mrs A. South, Mrs P. Bowden; third grade, Mrs M. Tarleton, Mrt N. Reed, Mrs M. Blanche; fourth grade, Mrs M. Richards. Mrs W. Timms. Mrs J. Steel; fifth and sixth grades, Mrs G. Mercer, Mrs Symes, Miss M. Curran.

MEN’S BASKETBALL SENIOR COMPETITION Solid zone defence and good rebounding by both Rex and B.G.H. A teams provided the best game of the evening when the Canterbury Men’s Basketball Association’s competitions were continued last evening. Both teams scored consistently, and only the height of the Rex forward line gave it a winning advantage. The ball control of the young B.G.H. forward line was admirable, but hesitant shooting cost the side eight or 10 points. The Rex scoring was very evenly spread; K. Ewing had eight ipoints, five others four points each. For B.G.H. A, J. Thompson and Saunders each scored six points. Y Boys played a game of consistent fast breaks to beat B.G.H. B. The game was marred by hard and often unnecessary fouling. Good refereeing by M. McKay and J. Anderson settled the teams down after half-time, and from that point Y Boys went steadily ahead. The rebounding of both sides was hard but good. There was too much dribbling, which spoiled good moves and often resulted in both sides losing possession. Highest scorer for Y Boys was M. McDougall, with nine points. Loose zone defence by Rex B upset the B.G.H. C team, but it was a good, even contest. The experience of the Rex team and even scoring among the players took the side to victory. The Rex team, with the inclusion of former Otago and Marl" borough representatives. W. Stolhurst and W. Cann, has become a solid, high-scor-ing combination. In the B.G.H. team K. Little gave a good display of ball control. Highest scorer for Rex. was T. Campbell, with seven points, and for 8.G.H., L. Jago scored four points. Results were:— Rex A 28. B.G.H. A 20; Rex B 24. B.G.H C 11: Taxes 15. Burnham 14; Y Boys A 21. B.G.H. B 7; Deaf School Old Boys 22, Y Boys B 15.
