TRAINING CAMP FOR SCOUTS

WEEK-END COURSE FOR OFFICER CANDIDATES Sixteen scouts of the Canterbury district, including one each from Kumara, Greymouth, and Ashburton, attended a Scout officers’ training camp at the Wharenui School grounds during the week-end. The scouts were formed into patrols under the leadership of the Assistant Provincial Commissioner for the training of scouts (Mr C. A. Holloway) and the troop leader (Mr G. A. Soanes). The course began . with the ceremony of flagbreaking and prayers. The camp, which was described as being very successful, was visited yesterday by the Porvincial Commissioner (Sir Joseph Ward). The preliminary training being completed, the candidates will take correspondence lessons before attending a two weeks’ practical course at Tatum Park, the Dominion training camp at Manakau.

Mr Holloway said that uniformity of scout training was obtained by the same basic principles being taught in camps throughout the world. The time of the trainees was occupied partly with lectures and party with practical work. Scout law, programme planning, camping organisation, and games and their purpose were themes on which the scouts received instruction. Practical work included mapping and rope work.
