Foursomes Title Won By R. D. Kearns And K. D. Foxton

GOLF

The two golfers who met in the final of the South Island and Canterbury championships at the Templeton course last October. R. D. Kearns, of the Christchurch club, and K. D. Foxton. of Russley. made a good combination when they teamed for the Canterbury men's foursomes, played at Russley yesterday. They won by one stroke. Aged 22. Kearns over the last year has developed into one of the province's foremost players. With Miss S. Grigg, also of the Christchurch club, he also won the Canterburv mixed chamoionship on Saturday. They wen this title last year. .

Conditions for the two days were excellent, except for a short period of rain about midday yesterday. The course looked most attractive. but players found difficulty in hitt’ng from dry patches on the fairways—the result of Canterbury’s drought. More than 90 pairs took part in the senior, intermediate, and junior sections. .Although scoring in the men's foursomes was not anart from a scratch 73 by Kearns and Foxton in their morning round, the competition became exciting towards its close, when several pairs appeared likely to win. After the first round. Kearns and Foxton led by three strokes from L. J. James and D. J. Ramsav, with the holders of the title, M. W. Stanley and F. W. Williamson, and W. D. Armstrong and J. D. Bull, on 77. When the leaders began to drop strokes at one stage of the afternoon, those pairs and al=o J. G. Scott and W. McGavock. D. W. Williamson and B. W. Cleland, who returned 79 in the first round, and R. E. Clements and D. C. Watson, who had had an 82. made determined efforts. In the end Williamson and Cleland, perhaps not as favoured as the others, beat them all into second place. Well-deserved Win Both members of the Canterbury Frey berg Rose Bowl team. Kearns and Foxton. playing together as a foursome team for the first time, thoroughly deserved their win. Both are careful and accurate players with a full range of orthodoy. attractivelvproduced strokes, and they were the steadiest pair in the field. When one made a mistake, the other would almost certainlv make up for it. Their morning score could have been better, for several short putts for birdies were missed. They be?an brilliantly with birdies at the first two holes, but they dropped strokes at the long sixth and the eighth to be out in scratch. 37. On the inward half two more birdies were nullified by two dropped strokes so they again had a scratch 36. Kearns impressed throughout the day With his beau ifullv e’ean hitting from the tee, and his short iron approaches, always his strong point, were delightful. Foxton genera ly played his iions well and putted with accuracy.

Their afternoon round was not nearly so good, for they lost seven strokes on scratch for an 80. After playing to scratch for the first six holes, and being unluckv not to get a birdie at the sixth when Foxton’s chip lipped the hole, they began to make errors. Playing the sixteenth. they were 5 over .scratch, and the sixteenth was disastrous. Kearns’s tee shot was behind the trees, one of which Foxton hit with his second. The third by Kearns also brushed the trees but took them back on to the right fairway. Foxton put them into the bunker at the next, and they finished with a 2-over-scratch 7. That was the main blemish on their play for the da--, and scratch holes for the next two were good enough to retain a lead on the field, even though it was narrowed.

-D. F. Williamson and Cleland did well to get up into second place. After an outward half of 45 in the mqming. they did not look likely to be among the leaders, but they came home in a very fine 2-under-scratch 24 for a 79. In the afternoon they did a very steady 75. with Williamson gain ng a good length off the tees and Cleland p’ayihg his irons to the greens with distin tion. At the scratch-5 second they had a .good chance for an eagle when their second was Bft from the hole, but they three-putted. Only three- strokes behind the leaders in the first round, the young Waitikiri pair of L. J. James and D. J. Ramsay failed badly in the afternoon with an 83. With chips not up to the pin and putts just failing to drop, they had dropped 7 strokes on scratch by the fifteenth. Title-holders’ Failure

The title-holders. F. Williamson and Stanley, had varying success throughout the day, but they were always within striking distance of the winning pair. They began brilliantly with an eagle at the 468-yard second, when Williamson played an iron to 2ft from the pin—a most commendable effort because he shot from a bare patch. Generally- two very accurate players and a tried combination, they looked likely winners when they went out in scratch 37 in the second round, but they then dropped four strokes in three holes. They dropped only one more, but the lapse in concentration around the greens ruined their chances.

-Armstrong and Bull, who were also on 77. collacsed in the afternoon to go out in 43. including four- 6’s. Armstrong, usually very consistent, especially around the greens, made mistakes, and Bull strayed off the line. Armstrong had some difficulty at times in judging distance.

After a first-round 82. Clements and D- C. Watson played ex ellently for a 76. Watson, who had been inaccurate earlier, tightened up his play, and was a good partner for the long-hitting Clements. Although Clements’s drives were not always straight, they took the pair well on the way to the greens, and his short chipping was masterly. They also had their bad patch, however, for they were one under scratch playing the fourteenth, but four over plaving the seventeenth. A fine birdie at the eighteenth, when Watson holed a good putt, pulled one stroke ba'k.

Consistent scores were returned by M. McNally and the young Waimairi Beach player. B. L. Clegg, who had two 80’s. A powerful hitter, McNally was not always straight, but he* played very well for a time in the second round. Clegg played his i’ons well, and a fine putt at the eighteenth after a long approach by McNally brought the side a birdie. Results:— Championship Senior.—R. D. Kearns and K. D. Foxton. 73. 83—153: D. MIXED FOURSOMES A steady 77 in the second round after an 84 in the first round which put them only in eighth position, enabled Kearns and Miss Grigg to win the mixed foursomes for the second year in succession. Last year their rounds were 83 and 77. Their 77 on Saturday was the only round better than 80. Kearns's easy swinging and accurate iron approaches were well complemented by Miss Grigg’s vigorous hitting and good putting. At first they did not appear the likely winners, because M. W. Stanley and Mrs H. A. Penn. D. C. Watson and Miss C. Wood, and R. G. Edward and Mrs Edward all scored 80 in the first round, and S. R. Cuthbertson and Miss V. Fleming, and C. J. Ward and Mrs Ward were on 81. Inaccurate length and putting lapses in the morning by Kearns and Miss Grigg were corrected in the afternoon. Two over scratch on the turn, they were four over alter the fourteenth, but did not drop another stroke. Miss Grigg chipped dead to the pin several times. When Kearns and Miss Grigg had returned their second-round card, it was known that Stanley and Mrs Penn had only to score another 80 to win, and for much of their round they seemed likely to score even better. Stanley was playing steadily, and Mrs Penn, who has been several times Russley club champion. gained good leneth. They went out in three over scratch, and were still three over after the thirteenth before they found trouble in and in bunkers. They were even cut out of second position when both Ward and Mrs Ward, and the Ashburton pair. L. A. Watson and Mrs Watson, who had the same scores of 162, went ahead on a count-back. The field, of more than 70 pairs, included 34 husband and wife combinations. Results:— Championship Senior.—R. D; Kearns and Miss S. Grigg, 84. 77—161; L. A. Watson and Mrs Watson. 82. 80—162; C. J.
